Composer Application (CHI: music/dance)

The 2016 Call for Composers is currently closed. Please check back again for other opportunities.

Group A: Six composers will be selected to create short, site-specific chamber works for musicians/dancers. Pieces will be composed for approximately 10-15 musicians (including 2 faculty members) plus conductor, and approximately 12 dancers, and should be no more than 5 minutes in length. Exact instrumentation, details of the site of the final performance, and composer/choreographer assignments will be provided soon after acceptance to the workshop. Fully composed pieces with computer copied scores and parts are due by 12 noon, Chicago time, Monday, Aug 1, 2016.

Group B: Six composers will be selected to create short, site-specific chamber works for musicians only. Pieces will be composed for approximately 12 musicians (including 2 faculty members) plus conductor, and should be between 5-10 minutes in duration. The pieces should explore physical space as a compositional element. Exact instrumentation and details of the site of the final performance will be provided soon after acceptance. If necessary for the piece, it may be possible to include more than one conductor. Fully composed pieces with computer copied scores and parts are due by 12 noon, Chicago time, Monday, Aug 1, 2016.

Composers may apply for both Group A and Group B, but if selected, will only be chosen for one Group. If the composer wishes to apply to both groups, only one application is required.

Don Freund, Professor of Composition at Indiana U will mentor composers individually in rehearsals, as well as in a seminar/master class setting. Composers will also interact with guest instrumental and dance faculty during rehearsals, and will have daily opportunities to participate in faculty led sessions including movement for musicians, and Brazilian Capoeira. Professor Beyer has just returned from a yearlong sabbatical in Brazil to study this intriguing martial art that meshes together music, movement, sport, self-defense, spirituality, and diverse folk traditions.

This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with emerging artists and some of the very best professional artists in music and dance working today. It is the hope of the LAB-Arts faculty that many future collaborations will begin with this workshop!

The deadline has been extended — we will continue to accept applications until all the spots are filled. If you applied using the online form, and DID NOT receive a CONFIRMATION EMAIL, PLEASE CONTACT US RIGHT AWAY!
